Nancy Cameron Films
NZ, 1946-1967, Exempt, 60 mins (DVD)
After sell-out screenings in Whanganui, the Film Archive is pleased to present this selection of ten short films by amateur filmmaker Nancy Cameron to our Wellington audiences. The Films of Nancy Cameron (1946-1967) will be screened with piano accompaniment by Sue Alexander.
Nancy’s subjects were her children, domestic life and family holidays. Many were dramas with descriptive inter-titles and animation elements. Something to enjoy for young and old, bring the whole family.
Nancy Cameron (nee Hales) grew up in Whanganui and lived most of her life there. In the mid 1940s she purchased a Bolex movie camera ostensibly to record her children growing up. She bought the camera from the General Machinery store in Taupo Quay.
Nancy recalled in a 1999 interview the salesman saying “we’ve got a Cine Club, but its all men, and I said I didn’t mind and I joined up...and at the first meeting “they proposed that women members make the tea and wash up! I never got over that! I’d joined to get away from washing up and kids, and learn how to use the dammed thing...and I was determined my first film was not going to have boring things in it.”
