Beautiful Chamber Music of the 17th Century by Scarlatti, Monteverdi, Frescobaldi, Rogniono & Castello, performed by Affetto.
Affetto
Jayne Tankersley - Soprano
Rosalind Halton - Harpsichord
Polly Sussex - Viola da Gamba, Cello
Peter Reid - Cornetto, Baroque Trumpet
The music to be performed takes us on a journey from Venice in 1600 to Rome about 100 years later. This is music rich in passion, (often the songs are about lost love) and colour.
This is a newly formed group comprising four highly experienced New Zealand musicians who specialise in seventeenth and eighteenth century music. For those who do not know the sound of the cornetto, the Baroque trumpet, the spinet or the viola da gamba, there are treats to be discovered.
Drinks will be served from 5pm, followed at 5.30pm by the concert. We recommend to reserve seats: email p.sussex@xtra.co.nz or phone 378.1057.
The venue is a magical and peaceful place, with limited seating, and should give an intimate musical experience for the listener in keeping with this 1600-1700 era.
Jayne Tankersley, soprano, specialises exclusively in Early music. She trained in Boston, and worked as a professional singer in the USA after finishing her studies.
Rosalind Halton, harpsichordist, New Zealand born, based for many years in Australia, has worked in Early music performance and research since completing a Ph.D. at Oxford.
Peter Reid, cornetto and Baroque trumpet, was first introduced to the cornetto while studying music in London, and it has taken him since to many parts of the globe. The cornetto is a rare but strikingly beautiful instrument, gently curving like a "little horn". The baroque trumpet plays only the notes of the harmonic series and is 7foot long and has no valves that were invented much later.
Polly Sussex, Viola da Gamba and Baroque Cello, recently returned from 18 months’ further study in Europe, performs, researches and teaches in Early music. She will shortly be teaching from her studio in Mission Bay.
