'This work relates to my personal story, with my father having been in the RAF, as well as to the fact that the global watershed of WWII still resonates within in New Zealand's own history and cultural identity. We read daily of war in all areas of the planet, advertisements speak stridently of war against pests, political rallies cry of war against racism, public servants declare war on crime.
But in a peaceful era in New Zealand how much does the academic concept of war actually affect us? One generation may speak little of their direct experience in a theatre of war, each subsequent one has its own battles to face. How can we understand the choices an individual must make when faced with a call to arms to defend ideologies or territory?
It is left to museums and archived media to act as reliquaries for the memories of atrocity, of glory, of bravery, of heroism and loss.' - Sue Pickernell
