The cartoons of Jim McNicol, aka ‘Inky’, were a regular feature on page 2 of Palmerston North’s Tribune newspaper throughout the 1970s. At times both humorous and mildly irreverent, Inky liked his readers to be informed about local issues, and sought to capture popular opinion on public transport, airport expansion, student housing, the building of a second bridge across the Manawatū River and more.

Inky’s cartoons are a light hearted record of happenings in Palmerston North during a crucial period in the city’s growth.
