Good Bye to Onehunga Market . . .
Such sad news as our Village Market has to stop trading. Before I explain the details of its demise, let’s acknowledge its great success while running.
A massive thank you to the stall holders and visitors for their support, you made the market a popular destination to visit and enjoy. The support from local businesses was immensely positive and the general feedback was that people wanted the market to return. It was clearly gaining great momentum due to “word of mouth” and its’ popularity was building. The Community House was a great venue that benefitted from the exposure.
Unfortunately Auckland City Council notified us that resource consent was required, a development that no one expected as the village market had run there successfully in the past. The site is one block away from the correct zoning, hence the need of resource consent to comply. After numerous discussions with the council and a planning consultant it was clear that the process would be a minimum of 3 to 6 months with the cost being approximately $15,000 with no guarantee of the outcome. Hence there were 3 options to consider: to apply for resource consent, to close down the market, or to relocate the market. Currently I’m working on option 3.
It has been an amazing experience to organise this market and I wanted to thank all the amazing, creative and talented individuals that I’ve been fortunate enough to have met.
Kind regards Leonie
