Shakti and Alfira: a Japanese and Javanese double billing at Galatos.

• Shakti In Empire of The Senses.
A unique blend of Japan and India, The Pillow Book and the Kama Sutra, Shakti’s sensual dance challenges the boundaries of art and culture and the philosophy of life.

Empire of the Senses is a tribute to nature. The performance reveals the strength and vulnerability of the human soul, and has received rave reviews in Edinburgh, Japan and Montreal.

With world-renowned cinematographer Simon Carroll’s vivid time lapse images, and atmospheric scientist Jorg Hacker’s compilation, this piece is truly a marriage of science and art. The images are of clouds, lightning storms and nature, blended together with Shakti’s body and dance.

“The effect is stunning and unforgettable, as we see Shakti walk through the desert and into the volcanoes.” – London Ballet Review

Beyond east and west, male and female, Empire of the Senses is a prayer to the universe and reveals how we strive to be one with nature.

• Alfira Solo.
Opening for Shakti, is Alfira, a Sydney-based dance artist who fuses contemporary with Javanese and Balinese dance styles.

She has studied at the Institute of the Arts in Surakarta and Yogyakarta, trained with master teachers in Aceh, Central Java and Jakarta, and performed with Indonesia’s most acclaimed choreographers and directors.

Alfira's work focuses on Aceh's traditional body percussion dances, Ratoh Duek. Performed both sitting and standing, these North Sumatran body percussion dances encompass intricate pattern-making accompanied by traditional devotional songs.

Presented with the assistance of the Asia New Zealand Foundation.
