Echoing the spirit of the street party that officially opened the Govett-Brewster in 1970, New Zealand's leading contemporary art gallery celebrates 40 years with a free, artist-led multimedia and performance event.

From 5pm a whakatau and karakia will open the Gallery, followed by a dramatic showing of Len Lye’s Trilogy (A Flip and Two Twisters) 1977, and launch of renowned New Zealand artist John Reynolds' exhibition NOMADOLOGY [Loitering with Intent].

Contemporary kapa haka performances begin on the outdoor stage from 6.30pm.

As night falls, the Gallery will be turned inside out with a large-scale projection and accompanying sound installation by visual musician Tim Gruchy. This will be preluded by a performance from self-playing robot band, The Trons and followed by a set from pioneering electronic dance duo Pitch Black.

The Govett-Brewster hits 40: pARTy is proudly supported by the Friends of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, TSB Community trust, Radio Network Taranaki and Te Kairanga Wines.
