Measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale and taking 261 lives, the 1931 Hawke’s Bay Earthquake remains the nation’s greatest natural disaster. Local landscapes were dramatically changed and Napier City was almost completely destroyed during the earthquake and the fires that followed.
In this exhibition you can discover how and why earthquakes happen, by using interactive displays. See precious artefacts from the collections of the Hawke’s Bay Cultural Trust / Ruawharo Ta-u-Rangi. and find out what it was like to live through this catastrophic event by watching the film Survivors’ Stories by renowned filmmaker, Gaylene Preston.
