This inaugural festival will be launched by patron Margaret Mahy at a cocktail party with wine, nibbles and entertainment by local poet and musician, Cliff Fell.
'For the Love of Books' is descriptive of Saturday's event. A full programme of readings and talks by NZ authors, poets and playwrights, books for sale, craft corner, an Illustrator's table, bookbinding demonstration, Stars on Stage, kids performance plus raffle, refreshments and prize giving.
Bridget Auchmuty will lead a creative wiritng workshop over two half days in the library, Saturday 27 and Sunday 28, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
The finale is a Festival Feast. Fiona Farrell, Barry Southam, Brigid Lowry and Gerard Hindmarsh will all talk about themselves, their books and the writer's life accompanied by a traditional afternoon tea.
Competitions are open now. Short story writing for three age groups, write a limerick or try the literary quiz. On the Saturday young children are invited to dress up as a book character for the morning parade. Older children, individually or as a group, can perform a rap on a book theme in the afternoon.
