Join the festivities on the grassy banks of Lake Hood, and cheer for your favourite teams as Dragon Boaters hit the peak of their season. Wacky uniforms, team haka, loud chants and the beating of the traditional drums create an electrifying atmosphere as 'corporate' teams, club crews and High Schools battle it out on the water.

Aoraki Dragons brings you the "South Island Dragon Boat Championships" on Saturday 6-March-2010.

Venue for Racing will be the international-standard rowing course at Lake Hood, 5 minutes from Tinwald, Ashburton. Teams compete in 500m race distances. There may possibly be sprint races, or a 2,000m race. The 2 km race involves three turns, so excitement level can get very high!!

Schedule: Formal proceedings for the day start at about 9 am with a Captains' briefing. Then Racing starts around 9.30am, with each crew having four heats - the best three race times determined their place in the finals. Categories will be Mixed Schools, Boys Schools, Girls Schools, and Adult finals. Depending on the entries, there may be more heats, or extra races may be run over different distances.

Races are run at 10 minutes intervals, with five (or up to 7) boats per race. Races may include Corporate, Open and BCS teams, as well as school squads.

Trophy presentation will be immediately after the last race, at about 4.30 or 5pm.

Food vendors near the tent area will sell chinese food, pizza, hot dogs and fries, coffee, ice Cream etc.

Aoraki Dragon Boat Association Inc is a not-for-profit collective that represents teams in Christchurch, to develop the competitive sport, providing facilities, boats and event organisation.
