Based on the legend of Te Houtaewa, the Challenge is a Run down the 90 Mile Beach and a Waka Ama Surf Challenge held on the same day.

The Challenge consists of:
60 km Open Ultra Marathon
42 km Marathon Run
21 km Half Marathon Run
21 km Half Marathon Walk
60 km 5 person Open Relay
6 km Walk for Life
Waka Ama Surf Challenge

Waka Ama Surf Challenge which is the only outrigger race in New Zealand held in the surf.

Starting at 8.30am at the Bluff for the Ultra runners & 8.30 at Paripari Domain, Ahipara for the Waka Ama paddlers.
