Stabat Mater in two contrasting styles. The Stabat Mater is a traditional liturgical text which expresses deep compassion for Mary, the mother of Christ, as she stands beside the cross on which her son hangs.
The Hamilton Civic Choir, conducted by Rachael Griffiths-Hughes, presents Palestrina’s beautiful 16th century a’cappella version and, in a completely different style, Giochino Rossini’s 19th century dramatic operatic setting - with soloists Glenese Blake (soprano), Mary Newman-Pound (mezzo-soprano), Pene Pati (tenor) and Ian Campbell (baritone), and accompanists Francis Cowan (piano) and Ann Cleaver-Holm (organ).
