What is it about?
Walk2Work Day is part of a Living Streets (www.livingstreets.org.nz) campaign that aims to encourage people to walk more in their daily lives. It is a free event held before work in a location close to the main walking routes, targeting people who have walked all or part of the way to work.
The Christchurch event will take place in Cathedral Square from 7-9am. Metro is supporting this event and people are encouraged to use buses if their commute is too far for them to walk all the way. Almost every bus trip requires a walk at either end!
“Christchurch is a great City for walking to work being a mostly flat terrain, having a refreshing variety of weathers to suit all walkers, and an abundance of pleasurable walkways and parks, rivers and streams, tree lined streets and beautiful gardens” says Fiona Whero, Living streets Network South Island. “Christchurch also has a fantastic public transport system making a combination bus/walk journey to work an easy choice”.
A new Christchurch City Council report by world renowned urban designer JanGehl recommends increasing walkability in the city to make the inner city even more vibrant, so walking to work looks set to become even more exciting in Christchurch. Check out the reports recommendations and get out your walking shoes on Walk2Work day in Christchurch to celebrate a renewed commitment by Council to walking. http://www.ccc.govt.nz/cityleisure/projectstoimprovechristchurch/publicspacepubliclifestudy/index.aspx
