"We were not born to sue but to command"
Richard the II, who succeeded his grandfather Edward III as King of England in 1377, is
one of the most important and controversial of the medieval Plantagenet sovereigns.
History records that Queen Elizabeth 1 barred the famous deposition scene as it ran "too
close" for comfort. His reign of twenty two years was one of the most dramatic in our history. The peasant’s revolt marked frightening social unrest when Englishmen first became aware of their
rights.
Richard did not regard himself as a constitutional King. His ultimate aim was to establish
a regime of royal absolutism, restoring monarchy, as he conceived it, to its rightful place
in the kingdom.
How did he fail?
A production exploding with decadence, desire and an intimate look at man's lust for ascendency!
Set in the stylish 30's, this production will wow its audiences with its beautiful design and
modern day interpretation.
Directed by David Sheard.
David is a graduate of The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and The National
Institute of Dramatic Art and has bought together a Cast both local and international.
He is very excited about his adaptation of this relatively unknown piece last performed in
Christchurch in 1955.
Come see this fresh spin, this high energy modern adaptation of one of Shakespeare's
greatest plays!
