Grateful for their growing audiences, this modern jazz trio plays Northland's cruiziest New York style jazz. The 'About Time' Jazz Trio, is playing The Butter Factory (downstairs) about every three weeks through the winter. The 5-column article in the Advocate's Gig Guide helped turn out a full house who could be heard saying "wow, didn't know Whangarei had such a big city venue where we can hear live jazz. Lucky us."
Butter Factory venue is a classy historical brick heritage building on Butter Factory Lane behind Farmers. It's the downstairs wine bar, not Butter Bank which is upstairs (also classy) on Bank Street (down from the Court House) just past the traffic lights at Bank and Rathbone St in Whangarei.

~~About Time Jazz Trio at The Butter Factory
On the 9th of April, I went to the Butter Factory bar in Whangarei to listen to a new group called About Time. There had been some publicity about the event in the local papers, so I thought I'd go along. The bar is an excellent venue, with a great selection of wines and other drinks, and some food platters if you want to eat.
I arrived just before 6pm when the band was due to start. I found the audience to be a mix with some younger people, but quite a few older people as well. During the course of the evening, people came and went, but it was never crowded, with seats being available most of the time.
The band was great. Consisting of trumpet or keyboards, bass and drums, you could either sit and listen to them as I did, or have them as background to your conversation, as most others did. They played a mix of older standards and newer numbers. The atmosphere was great. My idea of a night club you used to see in the movies.
I can thoroughly recommend the group and the venue.

Meet the band - all jazz inspired family guys from near Whangarei with years of passion for interesting jazz - Matt Hennessy on soft boom and bash; Matt Watson acoustic and electronic keyboards, trumpet, flugelhorn; and John Fraser on electric and stand up bass. A factino - they all have techie type day jobs so music is a creative break.
Tasty jazz for tasty gigs. Listen to samples of our range of sophisticated yet cruizy jazz on You Tube: www.youtube.com/jazztrionz
Come along - it's such a civilized time 6 - 9pm to unwind from the week.
