Television and Politics
(NZ, Various, Exempt, 70 mins)
A chance to look back through Archival footage at how politics has adapted to television and uses advertising to reach voters. We start in the country which perfected the relationship, the United States, where in a 1970 documentary, journalist Mike Wallace talks with political analysts and the PR men who run the campaigns. This is followed by incarnations of New Zealand political advertising and television campaigns from the late 1960s, 70s and 80s including Labour’s composite screen experiment from 1969 and National’s Hanna-Barbera animations from 1975.
