Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable wine-growing experience of Ian Sutherland and James Healy.
Join Ian and James at Scenic Cellars, Taupo for a tasting of library stock and current vintages from this Marlborough vineyard.
Ivan Sutherland and James Healy both entered the New Zealand wine industry in 1979. They established an enduring friendship and appreciation of good wine through their working relationship at Cloudy Bay for 18 and 12 years respectively, and played an integral part in the evolution of the Cloudy Bay brand.
Ivan and his wife Margaret own the 80-hectare Dog Point Vineyard and had long planned of starting a small quality-focused label using fruit from their own vineyards. After working alongside James at Cloudy Bay and finding they shared the same aspirations, James and Ivan decided to return to more 'hands-on' winemaking, launching the Dog Point label together with their wives in February 2004 with fruit from the 2002 vintage.
Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir fruit is sourced from selected parcels, all handpicked from older well established vines, situated on free draining silty/clay loams, supplemented with more recent plantings from closely planted hillside vines with a clay loam influence.
James and Ivan do all the winery work themselves, preferring the attention to detail/hands on approach, utilising old world philosophy and new world technology in their approach to winemaking.
Both men have travelled and tasted widely, particularly appreciating Burgundy and the low interventionist approach favoured by many producers there.
