Taonga Whakaari and Hawkins Theatre-Papakura, in association with Toi Whenua, are proud to host the launch of the inaugural Māori Playwrights Festival of Aotearoa to be celebrated in conjunction with the highly anticipated re-opening of the Hawkins Theatre–Papakura after major renovation.
We would like to invite you to be part of this exciting premier event. The day’s events will be divided into two parts. In the morning, the local kaitiaki will welcome guests and dignitaries to the Hawkins Theatre-Papakura with a dawn ceremony. This will be followed by a sumptuous communal breakfast at the theatre. The evening event will commence with a powhiri to welcome our guests and will be followed by a vibrant showcase of music and performance from featured festival plays.
Festival plays are:
Purapurawhetu, by Briar Grace Smith, starring Rawiri Paratene, Scotty Cotter, Roimata Fox and directed by Cathy Downes.
Raising The Titanics, by Albert Belz, starring Tama Waipara, Fran Kora, Wesley Dowdell, Bronwyn Turei, Miriama McDowell, Faye Smythe and directed by Raymond Hawthorne
Te Kaupoi, by Whiti Hereaka, starring Jason Te Kare, Tina Cook, Kay Smith and directed by Nancy Brunning
