John La Bouchardiere’s critically acclaimed film The Full Monteverdi, features leading vocal ensemble I Fagiolini. The film is entirely sung throughout fusing contemporary drama with the amazing music of renaissance Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi.
Monteverdi’s fourth book of madrigals, generally accepted as the finest, most virtuosic and varied, collection of unaccompanied vocal music ever written, explores the emotional state of lovers at different stages of break-up. In each of its twenty miniatures, varying aspects, moments and feelings are portrayed with profound human understanding through the most dramatic and thoroughly modern music for ensemble.
The film follows the simultaneous break-up of six couples, from shocking revelation, through vengeful anger and longing for reconciliation, to ultimate abandonment. It does so in a way that is at once vulnerable and disarming, drawing the audience into its intensely moving emotional journey.
The meticulous re-imagining of the poetry and music, has produced a visceral and relevant contemporary film, providing a unique opportunity to experience the genius of Monteverdi.
