Colin McCahon once remarked that he envied Toss Woollaston his free hand. Exploring the concept of a freehand and Woollaston’s determination to capture a sense of place, this exhibition will highlight some of the major influences Woollaston drew upon to develop his own abstract expressionist style and unique oeuvre.

From the Martindell Estate Tasman Bay, c 1990, oil on canvas, 1524 x 1786mm will be exhibited for the first time in New Zealand. Ann Martindall was the US Ambassador to New Zealand and a close friend of Toss Woollaston during the last 10 years of his life. Tasman Bay is a large canvas, a very significant work, painted by Woollaston especially for his friend and companion Ann Martindall.

The paintings and drawings included will be changed throughout the two month duration of the exhibition. The works include landscapes and portraits, oils, water colours and pen and ink works on paper.
