This will be one of only a few special NZ performances by The Checks in the next half of 2010. These special events precede their September tour of Australia promoting Alice by the Moon. Following their Australian excursion, The Checks will be back in the practice room to write their third studio album. They will let their fans taste-test the new tracks when the sun comes back out to shine.

For the uninitiated, Alice By The Moon has been enthusiastically received by the critics and audiences alike; and while it retains the rough-hewn R&B swagger of Hunting Whales, a kind of dynamic psychedelic soul has taken hold, leading the songs into rather different areas than the blues and modern rock many expected. The NZ Herald noted The Checks were treading “the fine line between experimentation and reinvention”, resulting in “delicious listening”; while inyourspeakers.com lauded The Checks’ “usual, pulse-pounding, energy, and nothing less”.

Supporting The Checks this time will be Wellington stalwarts Elston Gun. With a fearsome live reputation, 3 News said this of their Big Day Out 2010 performance: "For the people who pulled themselves away from the bigger and better known acts, I'm sure they left with sense of satisfaction, if not feeling inspired. Playing with the fever and passion of rock royalty Led Zeppelin, this is a band that is clearly meant for greater things. The future is very bright for Elston Gun and not even a equipment failure which ended their set prematurely, could tarnish a well polished performance.”

This is going to be a very special show, as two bands take the blues and twist it into something like you've never heard before.
