Enjoy an hour of te reo Māori song and dance with Mahinarangi Maika and her band.

About Mahinarangi Maika:

‘I always had it in my heart that I wanted to sing.’

Mahinarangi (Te Arawa, Ngāti Porou) started writing her own songs in 2006. Her music has a strong focus on positive, healing messages. She writes in English and Māori. Mahinarangi aims to appeal to a wide audience. Her musical influences are the Motown sound, reggae, soul, R & B, and jazz.

Mahinarangi’s backing band is drummer and jazz honours student Matt Nideck, from Vermont; her partner Joe Standeven on lead guitar; percussionist Audrey Hayman; and bass player Feroz Ali.

This year, Mahinarangi is focussed on recording in English and Māori. She is also lead singer for an all-female band, Mama Tilly, which plays mainly blues and rock originals.

Mahinarangi has sung all her life. She had vocal coaching as a student at Auckland University, where she met and performed with Tama Waipara, Robert Wiremu, and Anahera Higgins among others. She has performed her original music at local venues San Francisco Bathhouse, Katipo Cafe, and Bats Theatre. She has also sung at corporate gigs, Te Wiki o te Reo Māori celebrations, and local charity events. She has appeared on television shows Good Morning and Whare Puoro. More recently, Mahinarangi has received airplay on both Māori radio and local community radio. Not a bad start.

The Marae, Level 4.
