As a special treat given that it's one year since we started running Acoustic Cafe, and on July 31st we'll be having our Acoustic Cafe extravaganza show at Artworks Theatre, we have an excellent line up strengthened by some amazing talent from Auckand. Check this out.
- Jason McIver
- Josephine Costain
- Harmonica Lewinsky
Jason McIver:
Originally from Nelson, Jason has spent the past 18 months playing for various acts around Auckland.
After spending 6 years in covers bands playing in Wellington the move to Auckland has found him with a much wider selection of venues and opportunities and is easier to indulge in different musical ventures.
While his heart lies with acoustic guitar he writes for and fronts Heathen Eyes (a 4 piece heavy rock band formed at Mainz this year) while also playing guitar for singer/song writter Plum Greens backing band.
This has a been an inspiring year for song writing and Auckland is bringing out the best in the live shows and the support so far has been great!
Josephine Costain:
Auckland-based singer songwriter Josephine Costain's music is beautiful & passionate; like Joni Mitchell meets PJ Harvey.
In March, Josephine toured NZ, road testing new songs off her upcoming album (out later this year). Sharing her unique sound in intimate settings with her acoustic guitars, loop pedal and an assortment of percussion.
Recently returned from an inspirational tour of the USA, where she studied songwriting at Berklee College of Music and toured America; capturing hearts in New York, San Francisco and Nashville, she sites the trip as inspiration for the direction of her new material.

EP - 'Josephine Costain Live at St Mathews-in-the-city' is available for download at Amplifier and itunes.
Harmonica Lewinsky:
The name of this band is Harmonica Lewinsky. We play aggressive post-modern rock music with acoustic guitars and cheap drum machines. There are no harmonicas involved.
We have recorded an EP/mini album which we are self-releasing on cassette and we're experimenting with different ways of performing this music live. At the moment this is mostly based around vocals, acoustic guitars, bass guitars, and drum machines but other configurations are being explored too. We are performing as a two-piece or three-piece but this is also variable.
Core members are Felix (vocals, guitars) who began his career in the '90s with Auckland group Headless Chickens before moving on to playing in unknown bands in seedy bars and now mostly plays in his bedroom, and Lena (bass, vocals). Lena's trajectory has been in the opposite direction having begun as a solo artist performing in the cafes of Waiheke Island before forming the high-energy rock 'n' roll bands The Homewreckers and Clench who built a respectable following before disbanding last year.
