The 2010 TCAC Emerging Artist Awards opens Thursday 8th July 6 – 8 pm, and will be on display until Sunday 1st August.
Our third Emerging Artist Awards exhibition for those that are still finding their 'art feet' with two fortunate artists coming away with an arts grant to help further their arts careers.
A panel of 3 respected judges will award two grants to fresh new talent in Waitakere City – one for $1000, including a plaque that the artist will hold for one year, and the other for $500.
This concept was developed to bring out our hidden (emerging) Waitakere talent – the ones that have had little or no exposure to the public - and assist them by guiding them through a number of processes they will need to understand as they emerge: applications for awards, competitions, funding – exhibiting – advertising – building databases of buyers, galleries etc.
The Emerging Artists Awards Grants have a mandatory ‘accountability process’ that the recipients will also be guided through. The grants must be spent to further artistic endeavour (not to catch up on unpaid fines etc).
Up For Grabs:
• One Winner - $1000 Grant, plus $150 Resene Gift Voucher, $150 Gordon Harris Voucher
• One Runner Up - $500 Grant, plus $100 Resene Gift Voucher, $100 Gordon Harris Voucher
• 20 Finalists - $20 Resene Gift Voucher
Our judges - Gavin Hipkins, Naomi McCleary and Joanne Duggan.
Gavin Hipkins graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts, The University of Auckland in 1993 and has exhibited steadily since then. From 2000-2002, he studied at The University of British Columbia in Vancouver, gaining a Master of Fine Arts. He is a senior lecturer at Elam School of Fine Arts, The University of Auckland. The recipient of numerous prestigious awards, Hipkins has exhibited widely in New Zealand and internationally. Highlights include: participation in the25th Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil, 2002; being a finalist in the inaugural Walters Prize, Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, 2002; participation in Flight Patterns, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, United States, 2000; participation in Guarene Arte 2000, Turin, Italy; Supreme Award for contemporary art in the Art Waikato National Art Competition, 2000; participation in the 11th Biennale of Sydney, Australia, 1998, inclusion within Picturing Eden, a touring group exhibition initiated by the International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester, New York, United States, 2006; and Tell Me a Story: Narrative Photography Now at San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, United States, 2007.
Lives in Titirangi and past McCahon House resident.
Naomi McCleary is the Strategic Advisor for Arts at Waitakere City Council. Originally a print maker, she has been the arts administrator at Waitakere for over ten years and has managed an annual programme of major arts events throughout that time. The self-confessed Westie - she's been living in Titirangi and Oratia for around 30 years now - says she believes "in the concept of a creative city, a place where the arts and artists are honoured and are invited to contribute to creating a beautiful place to be". In 2004 Naomi was the first recipient of an Outstanding Individual Contribution Award from Creative New Zealand for her services to the arts within the local government arena.
Joanne Duggan: Representing our wonderful sponsor Resene.
