The Kerikeri National Piano Competition is New Zealand’s oldest and most prestigious piano competition, offering aspiring concert pianists a chance to showcase and test their skills over 3 days of extremely rigorous live performances.

“It’s by far the best test for young pianists in the solo repertoire in this country” Michael Houstoun.

The competition is international and open to pianists under the age of 30 as at 30th June 2010.

Competition 2010 will be adjudicated by Albert Tiu, Associate Professor (piano) at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Singapore.

• Thursday 1st July
Adjudicator Albert Tiu opens Competition 2010 with a recital in the auditorium. Following this there will be a reception and opportunity to meet the adjudicator and
the contestants.

• Friday 2nd July
Round 1 - Each contestant performs a major classical sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert.

• Saturday 3rd July
Round 2 - Each contestant performs a balanced 30 minute programme of music composed after 1685. The announcement of the finalists will be made at the end of the Saturday evening session.

• Sunday 4th July
Morning: Albert Tiu teaches an open masterclass to non-finalists of his choice.
Afternoon: The Final - Each finalist presents a balanced 45 minute programme of music composed after 1685 which must include one classical sonata. This may be the sonata played in Round 1 or an alternative. There must be at least 15 minutes of music not played in the previous rounds.

The prize-giving takes place on-stage immediately after the adjudicator has made his decision, followed by a celebratory reception for all.
