Dr Richard Sundt, Associate Professor in Art History at the University of Oregon, will be presenting an illustrated public lecture on the early whare karakia (Maori churches) of Tairawhiti.
His lecture will focus in particular on the early Maori churches at Whakawhitira and Rangitukia in the Waiapu Valley and Toko Toru Tapu at Manutuke. These early churches were notable for the innovative ways in which Maori builders and artists wove together the Maori and European architectural and cultural traditions.
Dr Sundt has recently published Whare Karakia: Maori Church Building, Decoration and Ritual in Aotearoa New Zealand 1834-1863. This book, resulting from many years of research in New Zealand archives and consultation with Maori communities, is richly illustrated with drawings, paintings, photographs and plans of the early Maori churches. His research sheds new light on the history of religion, architecture and Maori – Pakeha relationships in nineteenth century New Zealand.
