Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde
Mahler is perhaps the most iconically Viennese of all composers – passionate, nostalgic, melancholy, exalted, sophisticated, reflective. His great song cycle Das Lied von der Erde is the touchstone of fin-de-siecle Vienna Zeitgeist. Full of contrasts of joy, terror, wistfulness and autumnal warmth, it is a work for the ages. It is paired with Schubert’s beautiful and enigmatic Unfinished Symphony.
