The Charles de Gaulle exhibition of 12 large photographic panels commemorates the 70th anniversary of the first speech made by General Charles de Gaulle from London, following the German occupation of France.

It showcases different stages of de Gaulle's life: his youth, army career, political career, writing and retirement, as well as works from our extensive collection of relevant literature.

The 18th of June marks a dramatic moment in the history of the Second World War. While Marshall Petain was negotiating an armistice, de Gaulle, in a BBC broadcast on the 18 June 1940 reassured the French people that all was not lost.

He appealed to the French forces deployed outside France, and to the French population, to keep alive "la flamme de la Resistance".

This was the first mention of what was to become the Free French Forces and the first use of an expression that would become a legend: 'La Resistance'.
