Linux Conference Australia (LCA) Open Day

LCA is for the community of linux users. Linux is a computer operating system that is free (unlike the Windows operating system that has to be bought). There are also lots of applications that can be used on linux that are free. This includes Open Office (a free alternative to MS Office), GIMP (a free alternative to photoshop), etc.

There are many organisations that use linux, including WETA digital in Miramar, Wellington. They do the computer special FX for movies like LOTR 1 - 3, iRobot, King Kong, Avatar.

We would like to share linux (what it is, what it can do etc) with the public of Wellington. So LCA is having an Open Day which is free and open to the public.

This gives them an opportunity to learn about free and open source software in a very hands on fashion. We
have 30+ exhibitors from business, education and community groups demoing some of the software they have
written, along with a number of other activities including

- Fun activities for kids with the One Laptop per Child laptops in the Little Blu Kids Area (OLPC? http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=OLPC)
- Demonstrations from the Wellington makerspace group
- RepRap (www.reprap.org The machine that printed the artifacts shown on the front page of the site will be on demo)
- 2 New Zealand Electric Cars run with open source software
- 3 sessions about free and open source software
