“A bloody dog let loose in a sheep fold”. Shakespeare’s controversial portrayal of King Richard III has forever caricatured him in this way. An engagingly repellent character, as seductive and intelligent as he is violent and evil.
This is Shakespeare at his most disturbing and enthralling as relatives and colleagues are murdered by Richard’s evil obsession with the Crown. A revealing look into the power and politics of England’s royal family – only 600 years ago.
The seduction of Lady Anne also shows Shakespeare’s mastery in writing love scenes. Men admire Richard’s diabolical persuasiveness and women respond to his hypnotic and irresistible sexuality. He plays to you, the audience, relishing his evil designs as he plots and plans his game of “chop off the head”. Richard III
The first of Shakespeare’s great dramas. From the captivating and famous opening words, there are many lines that haunt the mind long after Richard’s violent end on Bosworth Field. Richard the Third, the monster who became ‘King Hell’.
Directed by Carol Dumbleton & James Bell
