A selection of artworks and photographs from Rotorua Museum collections gives a glimpse of 1950s and 1960s rural New Zealand.

‘Blokes’ cleared the land and settled on raw new farms – creating an enduring myth of the strong, reticent and pragmatic male. Artist Dennis K Turner’s Shearer Series depicting ‘blokes’ at work was a first – a vivid depiction of the working man. His art proved too much for the audiences of the day. Turner left New Zealand in 1964, a broken and disappointed man.
