Aotearoa's only community-organised weekend event, held at the historic Parihaka Paa, site of one of the darkest episodes in colonial NZ history. [For a brief history of Parihaka and its 19th century leaders,Tohu Kakahi and Te Whiti O Rongomai, and this festival, visit www.parihaka.com].
The festival includes two stages of (mostly) musical entertainment from NZ's top performers, plus a speakers forum, a film festival, eco forum, children's entertainment, teenage performance workshop, healing zone, festival choir, arts, crafts, food, camping and parking. The perfect place to start your summer holiday. Much more than a music festival - the Parihaka International Peace Festival is the entertainment event of the summer.
Now in its fifth year, the festival has earned a reputation as a laid-back and friendly affair, as befitting a peace festival. No arrests or incidents. Situated under the shadow of Mount Taranaki, it is a festival site like no other in Aotearoa.
More than 40 musical acts will be perform in 2010, including Fat Freddy's Drop, Tiki Taane & The Dub Soldiers, Smashproof, the Bellbirds (a new band featuring Sean Donnelly and Don McGlashan), Billy TK & Powerhouise, Herbs Unplugged, Moana & The Tribe, King Kapisi and Teremoana Rapley, Ladi 6, Rio Hunuki Hemopo (formely of Trinity Roots and Fat Freddy's Drop) and SJD, plus exclusive performances by Australian bands Kooii and Kingfisher. For all confirmed acts, see below.
Parihaka Paa is situated on Mid Parihaka Road, between Pungarehu and Rahotu on State Highway 45 (the “Surf Highway”).
