The McEntee Hire NZ Beach Volleyball Tour has been a feature of New Zealand’s summer sporting calendar for fifteen years, entertaining crowds with the action and athleticism of beach volleyball.
The tour moves to Mount Maunganui’s Main Beach for a weekend tournament on the 16th - 17th January. Mount Maunganui is aptly referred to as the ‘home of beach volleyball’ in NZ with its wide sandy beach, strong support base, and large number of players that hail from this part of the country.
The 2010 McEntee Hire Beach Volleyball Tour features the best of NZ’s beach volleyball talent, and some top international teams looking to sharpen their skills in the off-season to the FIVB World & American AVP Tours.
Heading the New Zealand hopes in the men’s competition is Kirk Pitman & Jason Lochhead. They had an outstanding season on the world tour in 2009, including a 9th placing at the World Chaps, and ended the year ranked 23rd in the world.
Local interest in the woman’s field will focus on the tall combination of Anna Scarlett & Susan Blundell. At 1.87m & 1.85m, they have been dubbed the “twin towers” of NZ beach volleyball. They are currently ranked 33rd in the world.
