Last weeks earthquake ripped through Haiti in seconds, but it has left years of devastation in its wake. As the death toll climbs steadily beyond 200,000 we sit helplessly in front of our TV screens.
Hardship is no stranger to Haitians, who have a history of triumphing when things get tough. Haiti has a culture of liberation and celebration in the face of all else, a culture steeped in voodoo ritual, dance and drumming. What better way to show our support than by beating some drums of our own.
Come witness a momentous and harmonious collision as representatives from various drumming communities around Auckland get together in support of Haiti.
A troop of Rarotongan drummers, the batucada sounds of AK Samba and Ghanaian highlife band Zoh Zoh are in the mix as well as solo performances from drum maestros Chris O’Connor, Julien Dyne and Lucky Paul. DJs Uncle Barnie and Bobby Brazuka will be playing along with drummers and percussionists such as Alistair Deverick and Ben Anderson and later on in the evening Nick D will be playing some fresh chunky African club tunes accompanied by live djembe players.
The Monte Cristo Room will be transformed for the night into a beat temple - complete with magicians, dancers and voodoo mammas painting your face.
