Jennifer Chou (organ) and Joseph Yu (trombone) will present an organ and trombone concert. Jennifer Chou is Director of Music at St John’s Anglican Church Camberwell in Melbourne. She graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Organ Performance, and obtained a Master of Music degree and Performance Certificate with honour at Northwestern University in the USA where her teacher was Wolfgang Rübsam. She furthered her studies with Susan Landale at the Conservatoire National de Région de Rueil-Malmaison in Paris at which she obtained the Prix d'Excellence and the Prix de Virtuosité à l'unanimite avec les félicitations du jury. She specialized in French baroque and North German repertoire with Michel Bouvard and Jan Willem Jansen at the Centre d'Etudes Supérieures de Musique et Danse in Toulouse and obtained the Prémier Prix d'Orgue à l'unanimité. In 2003 she won Mention Spéciale du jury as a finalist in the Biarritz International Organ Competition.
Over the years, Jennifer has given recitals in the US, UK, Europe, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand. She is in demand as a soloists and accompanist. In 2008, she gave the second Australian performance of the complete Le Livre du Saint Sacrement by Olivier Messiaen in Adelaide in celebrating the Centenary of the composer’s birth. The concert was recorded by 5MBS radio. She first visited New Zealand in 2008 and gave solo recitals in Christchurch, Timaru, Wanganui, Auckland, and Wellington. She performs regularly with her husband Joseph Yu as an Organ and Trombone Duo.
Joseph Yu is an internationally renowned brass player and teacher. He has played and worked with giants in the band world such as Tim Reynish, Clarke Rundell, Jerry Junkins, Eric Banks and Alfred Reed. He is much in demand both as a soloist and an orchestral player. He teaches brass at Mount Waverley Secondary College and Camberwell Girls’ Grammar School in Melbourne.
Joseph is active in both trombone performance and conducting. He was the conductor of the Wind Ensemble at Melbourne University from 2005 to 2007. At present, he is the music director of the Moorabbin Brass Band and the co-founder and chief conductor as well as President of the John Mallinson Youth Bands Program in Melbourne formed in 2009. He was guest conductor at the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival in South Korea at which he conducted the performances of the Hong Kong Metropolitan Winds with guest soloists Jason Xanthoudakis and Elizabeth Hamilton from Melbourne Australia. Their performance received critical acclaim.
Joseph graduated at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and he obtained the Professional Performance Diploma at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. He completed his Master of Music in Trombone Performance in University of Melbourne in 2005. He appears regularly in trombone and organ duo concerts with his wife Jennifer Chou, and has performed both in Australia, Hong Kong and Europe.
