Professor Perere (Joao Rodrigues Rosa) is an experienced capoeira teacher from the group ‘Aruande Capoeira’, founded by Mestre Demetrius. Originally from Cuiaba, Brazil he has been practising capoeira since 1992 and has been teaching for more than 10 years.

Perere has practised capoeira under the guidance of Mestre Sombra and Mestre Demetrius and has travelled throughout Brazil to further his training and knowledge with the support of many respected and experienced capoeira mestres.

Perere has taught capoeira in schools and community schemes, and also in social projects involving underprivileged children in Brazil. In 2005 he came to New Zealand and began teaching and promoting capoeira for kids, youth and adults. He has taught and performed at various cultural events throughout New Zealand.

Perere’s love and dedication to capoeira and Brazilian culture is evident is his enthusiastic and passionate attitude. His objective in New Zealand is to encourage the practice of capoeira as a cultural, poetic and musical expression, a physical discipline and a philosophy of life.

“capoeira connects us with our past and brings peace to the soul. It is the energy of axe that flows through the capoeira roda and connects us to each other”.
