Welcome to Wellington's celebration of Chinese New Year.
The Festival is now a major cultural experience in Wellington's event calendar and we invite you to help bring in the New Year of the Tiger. Personality traits of the Tiger are strength and independence, bridled with an impulsive nature.
Celebrations begin with the Sin Nian Tiger Party – a day for the kids and families, with activities for the young, and young at heart planned at Capital E, Civic Square. New Clothes for the New Year showcases high street fashion combined with urban street dance, which is fused with elements of traditional Chinese customs. This event is based on the tradition of wearing new clothes to see in the New Year, thereby encouraging good luck for the coming year.
Festival Day is the ‘flagship’ of the Chinese New Year Festival with a programme that reflects all the traditional aspects of a Chinese New Year celebration. Featuring an Asian Market, bustling with delicious Asian foods and authentic craft and merchandise, and includes a stage programme.
The Street Parade is a collaboration of local community groups who will treat Wellingtonians to a colourful and dynamic parade from Courtenay Place to the Waterfront. 90 minutes of stunning entertainment is the cultural showcase where local and international performances share the stage. Come and enjoy!
