Stagecraft Theatre’s February production is James Roose-Evans’ adaptation of '84 Charing Cross Road', directed by Tabitha Arthur.
This adaptation of '84 Charing Cross Road' loses none of the original books’ wit and warmth and is based on twenty years of correspondence between New York writer, Helene Hanff (the original author) and London antiquarian bookseller, Frank Doel.
In 1949, in search of obscure English books, Helene Hanff contacts Marks and Co., at the now famous address. So begins a long-distance, long-lasting friendship with Frank Doel and the other staff at the bookshop in whom she confides, with whom she jokes and whom she castigates, depending on her mood.
Like the bestselling book and Bafta-winning film, the play is moving and funny. It touches on topics that range from high literature to post-War rationing, from the Brooklyn Dodgers to Yorkshire pudding. Always there is the hope that Helene will actually meet the people she has come to know so well.
