Thanks to Maureen Kingi and Linda Ritchie, Rotorua enjoyed some glitz and glamour in the 1960s and early 1970s. In the hey-day of the contest Maureen and Linda quickly became household names. Few, though, know who the current Miss New Zealand is. Why were beauty contacts once so popular, and what does their demise tell us about living in twentieth century New Zealand? Dr Caroline Daley is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Auckland. The talked is timed to coincide with Geyserland Glitz and Glamour on the World's Catwalk which runs until 21 February 2010.
