There’s the Sound of The Whistle, the Train’s Coming In, and You Wait, Short of Breath, As a Journey Begins…
The Railway Children is a beautiful new musical based on Edith Nesbit’s classic family novel set in
the Kent countryside one summer in 1905. The story concerns a family who move to a house near
the railway after the father mysteriously disappears. The three children, Roberta, Peter and
Phyllis, find amusement in watching the trains on the nearby railway line and waving to the
passengers. They become friendly with Perks, the station porter, and with an Old Gentleman who
regularly takes the 9:15 train. Roberta, fondly known as Bobbie, often asks the Old Gentleman
for assistance and he always obliges. They are both instrumental in her father’s return.
The cast includes 25 adults and 20 children and is the New Zealand premier. An english classic
with an adult edge. Characters are strong and insightful and the music is powerful and uplifiting.
A show for the whole family!
