To compliment the opening of our new geology display our summer/autumn exhibition tells the story of the Takaka Hill.

Its geology; the Maori history and mythology including the story of the great taniwha Te Ngararahuarau; early settlers and their struggle to cross over the hill to Golden Bay as opposed to going by sea; those who farmed the hill and the families who remain today; the lime and marble works; the construction and never ending maintenance of the road, with acknowledgement to all the roadmen who spent so much of their lives keeping the road open - through snow, rain and the hot summer sun - and finally the notorious Harwood caves, a place of adventure for speleologists.
