It has been a big year and a great decade for New Zealand sport, and the Westpac Halberg Awards dinner - New Zealand’s pre-eminent sporting showcase, is going to be a fantastic occasion to celebrate that. This year we are especially excited to have Sky TV as our broadcast partner.

The Westpac Halberg Awards is a night when we gather to salute the country’s greatest sporting achievers of the previous 12 months. There have been some outstanding results in a range of sports including: the rowers at the World Championship regatta, with gold medals from Mahe Drysdale, Duncan Grant, the men’s pair and the lightweight double; Alison Shanks claiming the gold medal in the 3000m individual pursuit at the World Championships; Sarah Walker becoming BMX World Champion; Valerie Vili retaining her World Championship crown with some great throws.

The 2009 Westpac Halberg Awards also doubles as our chance to honour our Athlete of the Decade. Potential winners of this prestigious award include previous Halberg Award winners: Rob Waddell, for his gold medal performance at the Sydney Olympics; Georgina and Caroline Evers-Swindell, gold medallists at both Athens and Beijing; Sarah Ulmer, for her gold at Athens; Michael Campbell, for his win at the US Open in 2005; World and Olympic champion Valerie Vili; and Mahe Drysdale – who would you pick?

There are some tough decisions facing the Halberg Voting Academy. All will be revealed at the glittering black-tie dinner at SKYCITY in Auckland, on Thursday February 4th, 2010.
