Flamenco singer flies in to Wellington for one-night fiesta. Spanish flamenco singer Antonio Montes Soto visits Wellington this December for a fiesta to remember - joining Desde Sevilla Flamenco Dance Company and guests for one performance.
This show presents a rare opportunity for New Zealand audiences to experience flamenco singing (cante), and for many, the first chance to enjoy it in an intimate venue. It is one of those rare talents that defies imitation; it seems to live in the gypsy blood and is generally learnt by osmosis and a lifetime's apprenticeship.
The show - Fiesta Flamenca - will be reminiscent of the tablaos (clubs) in Spain where the singer, the most revered member of any flamenco performance group, takes centre stage, supported by guitar, percussion, palmas and dancers.
While Fiesta Flamenca will feature Antonio's solo singing (cante), the spine-tingling moments will be when singer, musicians and dancers work their synergy to produce a crescendo of excitement and energy.
Born to Spanish parents in southern France, Antonio was taken, from the age of six, to tablaos in Madrid by his uncle, a flamenco singer from Seville. He developed a passion for the art and now lives and performs in New Caledonia, returning to Spain each year to immerse himself in flamenco song.
Desde Sevilla Flamenco Dance Company, Wellington Flamenco Dance School students and guests, offer an exciting evening of flamenco song, music and dance which will thrill music and dance lovers alike.
