Rudall Hayward (1900-1974) was the father of New Zealand film. Auckland Museum presents his life of storytelling and innovation, and displays the cameras he used in a lifetime of film-making adventure.

From his beginnings as a nine year-old operating the wind up spool in his father’s cinema to his epic features set in the New Zealand Wars, Hayward was immersed in the art and magic of the movies. He invented his own sound camera and experimented with cutting-edge techniques to tell New Zealand stories.

Tamaki Gallery (Ground floor, Southern entrance).
