Take a walk on the West side. The secrets of New Zealand’s most successful television drama series Outrageous Fortune are laid bare in this exhibition created by Auckland Museum in partnership with the show’s production company South Pacific Pictures.

Outrageous Fortune became New Zealand’s longest-running drama with its storyline following the high and lows of the West family’s life as they tried to go straight after a lifetime of thieving, scams and crooked deals.

This exhibition takes fans and the uninitiated into the West’s private world, uncovering how the characters were created and brought to life through the script and production process. Costume pieces and props will complete the picture of this well-loved, if slightly dysfunctional, family.

Visitors can also spend time in the West family’s living room, a backdrop at the centre of many of the plot-lines in the award-winning series, and see previously unreleased footage shot in 3D.

With the sixth and final series of Outrageous Fortune at an end, the exhibition presents a chance to consider how West Auckland was portrayed by the show and examine the facts versus the fantasy. It has been embraced as a Kiwi tale by its local fans but its plot resonated with audiences around the world with TV networks in England, Ireland, Italy, Canada, Australia, Slovenia and Croatia airing the series and local versions being filmed in the UK and US.

This exhibition has been created in the spirit of the television series. Children aged 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Held in the Exhibition Hall.
