A small flask containing live HIV, an edition of Playboy published in Braille by the US Library of Congress, a white tiger in a cage that’s retarded from excessive inbreeding, stacks of freshly painted uncut $100 notes inside the US Treasury, sexual assault kits awaiting analysis, a nuclear submarine’s missile control console…
Taryn Simon’s photographs can look deceptively ordinary until onlookers realise what they’re looking at.
The Govett Brewster’s new exhibition Taryn Simon: An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar is a powerful collection of photographs revealing hidden sites from around the United States.
The New York-based photographer presents an intensely researched, fascinating series of powerful photographic images. Surveying a variety of subject matter Simons’ images offer unimagined insights into the political, scientific and sociological complexities of our everyday lives. Produced over a period of four years and shot on film, Simon assumed the position of contemporary undercover detective as she collected images of mystery and wonder, raising important lines of thinking about visible and invisible systems of control.
The Govett-Brewster is the only venue in the North Island of New Zealand to present Taryn Simon’s exhibition toured by IMA, (Institute of Modern Art) Brisbane, Australia.
