Sleight of Hand: The Port Nelson Suter Biennale assembles fine examples of work by artists who remain committed to traditional art values, combining technical skill with visual theory to create a range of illusory effects.

By returning to classic values of connoisseurship, this exhibition attempts to avoid the stereotypical challenge of contemporary art. These include the pesky and tiresome question of skill (“my child could do better”) or aesthetics (“is that rubbish?”). In fact, Sleight of Hand relies on the impact of art works that are clearly impressive in terms of skill and concept in order to stimulate a different, but equally provocative, set of questions that relate to personal taste and style.

Contributing artists are: Sam Harrison, Megan Jenkinson, John Ward Knox, Julia Morison, Joe Sheehan, Peter Gibson Smith, Mervyn William and Emily Wolfe.

This exhibition is supported by Port Nelson Limited and Creative New Zealand.
