“marti Friedlander: Looking Closely” presented by Marti Friedlander with Professor Leonard Bell
Marti Friedlander is one of our most acclaimed photographers: her images are both familiar and startling at the same time.
This presentation will focus on a selection of Marti’s photographs that were included in last year’s exhibition of her work at the University of Auckland's Gus Fisher Gallery - portraits of artists, writers and musicians, street and beach scenes in NZ, as well as photographs taken in Israel, Austria, and the Pacific Islands.
Marti has been observing the lives of New Zealanders for over 50 years and her photographs offer an open dialogue with their subject, inviting the viewer’s prolonged engagement and interpretation. Whether photographing artists and writers, or protests and street scenes, her empathetic scrutiny draws out the essence of her subjects, capturing the key human dynamics of conflict, ambivalence, anger and warmth.
Marti will present her lecture in conversation with author and art historian Professor Leonard Bell who wrote her recently published book “Marti Friedlander: Looking Closely”.
