Discovery Squad and Workshops:

The Museum’s supervised holiday programme Discovery Squad starts these summer holidays with some pre-Christmas cheer. Like a jam-packed stocking these morning sessions – running from Monday 20 December until Friday 24 December, are stuffed full of activities creating, crafting and celebrating Christmas. Explore Discovery World and Tropical Forest, visit the galleries and of course meet Santa Claus himself! 'Yule' be wrapped!

But don’t let the post-Santa blues get you – the New Year brings another whole range of Discovery Squad antics! Starting on Monday 17 January, there’s another two weeks of fun-filled, awesome activities planned. From creating flip flops to keep you in cool in the summer sun, to exploring the museum’s summer exhibition Your Face Here, where you’ll sculpt your own clay face, and munch on edible emotive faces. Celebrate the New Year in style with cultures from across the world; go for a fishy frolic around the museum, or enrol in the museum’s Spy School to become an expert of espionage! With morning and afternoon sessions available and fully supervised, Discovery Squad is perfect for keeping those young minds activated and stimulated over the summer break.

For the technological whiz, sign up for Robots Rock Workshops, running every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from Monday 10 January - Friday 21 January. Experience the latest in Lego Mindstorm robotic technology, with morning and afternoon sessions available. Use light sensors to navigate the crazy mazes, make your robot dance to the sound of your own beats with sound sensors, plus heaps of other cool challenges to programming potential!

Discovery World:

In Discovery World these holidays we’re exploding with excitement! Daily throughout the holidays, these shows are too hot to handle!

Discovery World is the hottest place in town as we look at Hot Topics in the Tropics! At 11am and 3pm, discover the amazing ecosystem and environments of a tropical rainforest and see experiments as we find out why it rains there so much and what adaptations plants and animals develop to survive.

Meanwhile, a dastardly hoax has occurred and there are some pretty guilty looking faces around! Pick up a Detective Conan's trail from the Search Centre desk and follow the clues to visit the famous faces of the Otago Museum collection. You’ll be set to figure out what happened and whodunit – it’s great fun for young gumshoes!

Freaky Science:

Every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday throughout January, the Freaky Science shows will scratch the surface... of your face! Get ready to open your eyes and tune in your ears as we explore weird wonders of sight and sound. Be there for sense-ational experiments, dissections and cool things you can try at home!

Think you've seen it all? Think again! The Eye Popping show takes a look-see at the freaky world of optical illusions, as you watch an eyeball being dissected and find out what all the bits inside are for! That Sounds Sensational show will get you amped to experiment with sound waves, sonic booms, melodic music and more as we explore the crazy sounds that get inside your head!
