Christchurch Symphony Orchestra presents Lamb & Hayward Masterworks Series, Four Last Songs.
Sir William Southgate, conductor.
Patricia Wright, soprano.
Well-known New Zealand soprano Patricia Wright will perform Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss, his last completed works inspired by the poems Im Abendrot (At Sunset) by Joseph von Eichendorff and Frühling (Spring), September, and Beim Schlafengehen (Going to Sleep) by Hermann Hesse. Deservedly known as The Waltz King, Johann Strauss II’s, The Kaiser-Waltzer is a magnificent work of pomp and majesty with a constantly upbeat and triumphant mood.
Bruckner, an organist, wrote nine symphonies, all of them in an unashamed Wagnerian style. Symphony No. 4, the Romantic Symphony, was his first great success. With powerful codas and grand finales as well as frequent unison passages, the orchestration was modelled after the sound of his primary instrument, the pipe organ.
J. Strauss II, Kaiser-Waltzer Opus 437
R. Strauss, Four Last Songs
Bruckner, Symphony No. 4
